Star Trek Beyond Set Video Reveals Sofia Boutella

New video from the Star Trek Beyond set reveals strange new costumes, new life and new civilizations

Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek Beyond is now in production in Vancouver and Screen Crush today managed to get an excellent look at some of the outdoor filming. In the player below, you can check out video from the Star Trek Beyond set that features stars Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and, in heavy alien makeup, Kingsman: The Secret Service star Sofia Boutella.

Sofia Boutella’s character doesn’t seem to belong to an existing Star Trek race, although the white skin and black facial markings certainly bring to mind the Nibiran people from Star Trek Into Darkness. A primitive, pre-warp civilization, the Nibirians became the collective victims of a massive Prime Directive violation on the part of Pine’s Captain James T. Kirk at the beginning of the J.J. Abrams film.

Also featured in the Star Trek Beyond set footage is a new Starfleet jacket worn by Pine and Yelchin. Seemingly the source of the Delta logo patch director Justin Lin tweeted back in June (as seen above), the design is reminiscent of both the “Star Trek: Enterprise” crew uniforms and Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s “Star Trek: The Next Generation” fifth season duty jacket.

Star Trek Beyond will also feature the return of Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and John Cho along with new roles for Idris Elba and Joe Taslim. Abrams, who directed the last two films, is producing the third film in the rebooted franchise. Lin is directing from a script by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung.

Paramount Pictures has Star Trek Beyond scheduled for a July 8, 2016 release, which happens to be exactly two months to the day before the franchise’s 50th Anniversary. Although it wasn’t the first episode produced, “The Man Trap,” in which the crew of the Enterprise encounters a deadly shapeshifting salt vampire, introduced the world to “Star Trek” on September 8, 1966.
