Warning: Spoilers for The Amazing Spider-Man 2…
One of the major changes that we know happened in this summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the complete excising of Mary Jane from the film. Actress Shailene Woodley was cast in the role and filmed all her scenes but eventually she was removed altogether. Now, the folks over at Badass Digest have gotten their hands on an early draft of the film’s script by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman that reveals a number of other things that didn’t make it into the final film.
The site reports that in the original script, Max Dillon “lives at home with his wheelchair-bound mom, who doesn’t think much of him. He has to take care of her, and after he ‘dies’ in the accident that gives him powers he comes home to find his mom standing up and getting a big payout from Oscorp. He gets angry and begins using his powers, which is what sets off his confrontation with the police in Times Square.”
Another character originally included in the film was The Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson, who gives Peter a tour of the newspaper in the earlier draft. The Bugle even provides a setpiece for a fight scene between Spider-Man and Electro.
The most interesting tidbit about the previous draft is that the finale of the film was relatively the same, except instead of Gwen Stacy’s recorded graduation speech convincing Peter to become Spider-Man once again, his father Richard Parker appears alive and well and gets him back in the saddle. Also, in the scene, Richard leaves Peter with the famous “With great power comes great responsibility” line, though as we know now, this was cut from the final film.
