Thompson on Hollywood got a chance to talk to composer Hans Zimmer last night at an Inception DVD/Blu-ray release party, where he said he will be doing the score for the Zack Snyder-directed Superman movie:
On Jan. 1 he starts scoring Chapter 4 in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which shot months ago in Hawaii. He’ll follow that with the Sherlock Holmes sequel, a Kung Fu Panda follow-up; then he’ll work on Nolan’s new Superman chapter.
At the event, HitFix also talked to producer (and Christopher Nolan’s wife) Emma Thomas, who revealed that Nolan has handed off the Superman movie to Synder and won’t be involved much after putting together an "appropriate screenplay" now that he’ll concentrate on The Dark Knight Rises. We quote:
And she made it clear that in the case of "Superman," Nolan and David Goyer just had an idea they couldn’t believe wasn’t being explored by Warner Bros. And with Zack Snyder now on board as director, Nolan will be busy making "The Dark Knight Rises" and "we are handing it off to him." So, take note anyone out there thinking this will be a strange Nolan/Snyder partnership. Thomas reiterated that they brought it to an appropriate screenplay and it’s now Snyder’s picture.
The Superman movie is targeted for a December 2012 release.
UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter has debunked claims that Zimmer will be involved in the Zack Snyder film.
Claiming the rumor is "some dirty quote taken out of context," Zimmer affirms that he has no plans to score Superman, likening attempting to improve John Williams’ original theme to "rewriting Beethoven’s ninth."
"So that’s unequivocally a no," Zimmer told The Hollywood Reporter, "I have never spoken with Zack Snyder."
