X-Men: James Marsden Praises Deadpool & Wolverine, Addresses Marvel Return Chances

Actor James Marsden isn’t sure about an X-Men return, but he did love Deadpool & Wolverine.

While promoting his new movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Marsden was asked about his time starring in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. The actor portrayed Scott Summers/Cyclops, a mutant superhero with the power to emit powerful beams of energy from his eyes, in all three installments of the original X-Men film trilogy. While Cyclops was killed off in the third movie, 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, Marsden returned as the character for a quick cameo at the end of 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past after the movie’s time travel shenanigans led to him, and countless other heroes, being resurrected.

What did James Marsden say about possibly returning as X-Men’s Cyclops?

While speaking with Screen Rant, Marsden opened up about the chances of him reprising the role of Cyclops for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, admitting that he knows “so little about all of that.” However, the actor revealed that he did get a chance to see Deadpool & Wolverine when it was in theaters, sharing that he “loved the movie . . . it was great, and seeing Hugh back in that costume was great.”

Returning to the odds of a Cyclops reprisal, Marsden added, “I look back on that experience with such affection and reverence for all of it, and I loved playing that character. It was one of the highlights of my career, for sure. So, it was a joy and yeah, I mean, I don’t know what they’re doing or what’s happening with it all, but it was always fun to put that costume on.”

Marsden’s comments come less than a week after Tye Sheridan, who portrayed a younger version of Marsden’s Cyclops in the X-Men prequel movies, cast doubt over a possible Marvel return.

“I don’t know. I don’t think there’s a question if there’s more stories to tell. I think there’s probably always more stories to tell,” he said. “The question is whether audiences have a desire for those stories and whether we feel like those types of films have been oversaturated or they’re not, or if there’s a new way to make those films. But yeah, I’m not real sure.”
