Star Wars fans have just been hit with some good and bad news regarding two upcoming movies set in a galaxy far, far away.
Disney and Lucasfilm have not released a new Star Wars movie in theaters since 2019 when The Rise of Skywalker concluded The Skywalker Saga. However, the drought of Star Wars on the big screen is about to change, with The Mandalorian & Grogu scheduled to hit theaters in May 2026. While plot details remain under wraps for the Jon Favreau-written and directed feature-length continuation of the hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian, production has reportedly wrapped on the project.
According to Puck (via X), The Mandalorian & Grogu, which has been in production since August, has wrapped filming. With seven months until its release date, Favreau and the rest of the post-production team should have no trouble getting the hotly-anticipated movie finished in time. Pedro Pascal reprises his role from The Mandalorian as Din Djarin in the movie, with Grogu and Zeb Orrelios also slated to appear. Sigourney Weaver, who is best known for her work in another popular sci-fi franchise Alien, has been cast in a mystery role.
Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars movie suffers another setback
As one Star Wars project concludes production, another struggles to get into it, as Daisy Ridley’s forthcoming franchise return has been hit with another roadblock. First reported by Puck and confirmed by Variety, screenwriter Steven Knight has departed the Star Wars movie that was set to follow Ridley’s Rey Skywalker roughly 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy remains attached to direct the movie, which would serve as her feature debut.
Knight is now the second screenwriter to exit the project after original scribes Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Lucasfilm is in active talks with potential writers to take on the story, which will reportedly revolve around Rey’s efforts to start a new Jedi Academy. Unfortunately, with Knight’s exit, the production start date for the movie has been pushed back, with cameras unlikely to begin rolling until “well into 2025 at least.”
The Mandalorian and the Star Wars sequel trilogy are available to stream on Disney+, while The Mandalorian & Grogu is scheduled to hit theaters on May 22, 2026. The untitled Rey Skywalker movie is without a release date at this time.
