Armor Wars: Don Cheadle Provides Update, Teases Skrull Twist Aftermath

War Machine actor Don Cheadle has provided new details about the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Armor Wars.

Although initially conceived as a six-episode Disney+ limited series, Armor Wars has since been redeveloped as a feature-length movie. While plot details remain under wraps for Armor Wars, the superhero movie is expected to pull from the seven-issue Iron Man comic book storyline of the same name that focused on Tony Stark dealing with his armor falling into the wrong hands. With Tony Stark dead in the MCU, Cheadle’s James Rhodes/War Machine is expected to fill the role Stark played in the original comic.

Marvel Studios has been pretty sparse on details regarding Armor Wars since its initial announcement, causing concern within the fandom that the project may have been scrapped. There was even a recent report stating that the superhero project and the Blade reboot were on the chopping block at Marvel Studios. While speaking recently with TVLine about Peacock’s Fight Night miniseries, Cheadle offered a disappointing update on the status of Armor Wars.

After being asked if he knew what was going on with Armor Wars, Cheadle told TVLine to “find out and let me know,” suggesting that Marvel has not kept him in the loop as to when exactly the project will enter production. The actor also opened up about Armor Wars, which will be the first MCU project to be led by War Machine, moving from a limited series to a blockbuster movie.

“I think the word that’s the most salient in that sentence is ‘switched,'” he said with a laugh. “I don’t know, I’m not sure where anything is right now. I think things are going through a lot of changes, and we’ll see what happens, we’ll see what it is.”

Secret Invasion’s Rhodey/Skrull twist may be explored in Armor Wars

While Cheadle remained tight-lipped on Armor Wars details, he seemingly revealed that the movie would be set after the events of the 2023 Disney+ limited series Secret Invasion. When asked to comment on his initial reaction to learning that Rhodey would be revealed as a Skrull during Secret Invasion, the actor suggested that the twist reveal in the limited series was a setup for a future MCU project, likely Armor Wars.

“Uh . . . you know, there was no . . . it wasn’t a demand. It was a request. ‘What do you think about playing this?’ And it was to set up stuff in the following thing,” he explained. “So, if the following thing happens, and all those things were set up, then that’s one thing. If, as you said, it doesn’t, then we can talk about how I feel about it after!”

Marvel fans can stream every MCU movie and series featuring Cheadle’s War Machine on Disney+.
