Joker: Folie à Deux Early Opening Box Office Projections Put It Behind Original DC Movie

The opening weekend box office projections for Joker: Folie á Deux have been revealed.

Joker: Folie á Deux will be released nationwide in the United States this coming October. The movie recently premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival earlier this month, where it was met with mixed reviews from critics.

How much is Joker: Folie á Deux expected to make during its opening weekend?

Per Deadline, Joker: Folie á Deux is currently tracking to make upwards of $70 million at the box office when it hits theaters in approximately three weeks.

The 2019 Joker movie, in comparison, made $96.2 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend. It had the best October opening day for any movie (beating 2018’s Halloween) and went on to make $335.5 million in the United States and Canada. With an additional $743.5 million coming from other totals, Joker’s ended its theatrical run with around $1.074 billion.

It was the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time until Deadpool & Wolverine just recently surpassed it this summer.

“Joker: Folie À Deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside him,” the synopsis for the new movie reads.

Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as Arthur Fleck in the DC sequel, while Zazie Beetz also returns as Sophie Dumond. Lady Gaga, meanwhile, plays Harley Quinn, and Harry Lawtey plays Harvey Dent. The cast also includes Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, Jacob Lofland, Ken Leung, Leigh Gill, and Sharon Washington.

The movie is directed by Todd Phillips, who also helmed the 2019 movie. Phillips co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver.

Joker: Folie á Deux opens in United States theaters on October 4, 2024, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
