The Hulk may “show up” in Captain America: Brave New World, according to Anthony Mackie.
Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World will be released in United States theaters in February 2025. The film will see Mackie reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, while Harrison Ford is playing Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk.
Thunderbolt Ross was previously played by William Hurt, who passed away in 2022, in several MCU projects, including 2018’s The Incredible Hulk. A number of other characters from The Incredible Hulk will also appear in Captain America: Brave New World, including Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross and Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns/Leader.
What did Anthony Mackie say about Hulk being in Captain America: Brave New World?
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the cast of Captain America 4 was asked how important the events of The Incredible Hulk were to understanding the forthcoming MCU film, at which point Mackie let it slip that Bruce Banner/Hulk may also have a presence in the movie.
“[The Incredible Hulk] is a different movie,” Mackie said. “He’s green, I’m Black. It’s a whole different movie, man. He don’t wear draws, I wear a costume and a full suit. It’s a whole different thing. The events of Hulk and his film don’t pertain to this movie at all.”
“C’mon, man,” Ford commented.
“Not Red Hulk, the other Hulk,” Mackie continued. “There are multiple Hulks. So when he shows up — but there’s only one Red Hulk. There’s only one. That’s it. There will never be another Red Hulk. That’s it. When [Hulk] shows up, his world, his universe, his story is completely separate from the way that we utilize him in our story.”
Mark Ruffalo previously said in February 2024 that he would be reprising his role as Bruce Banner in Captain America: Brave New World; however, he later said that he had misspoken and wasn’t actually going to be in the film.
Whether or not Ruffalo’s Hulk truly shows up remains to be seen when Captain America: Brave New World, which is directed by Julius Onah, releases in United States theaters on February 14, 2025, from Marvel.
