Deadpool & Wolverine ‘Flirted’ With Idea of Making Mephisto the Villain

Shawn Levy says they “flirted” with making Mephisto the villain of Deadpool & Wolverine prior to Emma Corrin’s casting as Cassandra Nova.

Deadpool & Wolverine opens in United States theaters this coming weekend. The MCU movie will see Corrin (The Crown, Good Grief) play Cassandra Nova, a villainous character who is the twin sister of Charles Xavier.

Speaking with Collider, Levy, who directs Deadpool & Wolverine, and Ryan Reynolds said that, at one point, they were considering making Mephisto the villain of the Marvel movie.

What did Shawn Levy say about Mephisto and Deadpool & Wolverine?

“That’s who it was,” Levy said when Reynolds reminded him they were toying with the idea of including Mephisto. “We went through a lot of ‘almost’ versions of this story before we landed. Frankly, it was the infamous call from Hugh, but then it was this idea of Cassandra Nova as a sibling to Charles because Cassandra’s link to Professor X creates an interesting dynamic and fascination in Cassandra about you [to Jackman].”

While it hasn’t been officially confirmed at this time, Sacha Baron Cohen is rumored to be playing Mephisto in the MCU. It has been confirmed that Baron Cohen will appear in Marvel Studios’ forthcoming Ironheart series, which is expected to premiere on Disney+ in 2025. Ironheart also stars Dominique Thorne, Anthony Ramos, Alden Ehrenreich, Lyric Ross, and more.

Along with Reynolds and Corrin, Deadpool & Wolverine stars Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Rob Delaney as Peter, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, Shilo Kutsuna as Yukio, Aaron Stanford as Pyro, Tyler Mane as Sabretooth, and more.

Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in United States theaters on July 26, 2024, as part of Phase 5 of the MCU.
