Batman: Glen Powell Expresses Interest in Playing the DC Hero

Actor Glen Powell has shared that the Gotham City-based vigilante, Batman, would be one of the few superheroes he would consider playing on the big screen.

In an interview with GQ on the Warner Bros. backlot, Powell revealed that he is not interested in playing superheroes, except for Batman who doesn’t have any powers. “I was always a Batman guy,” admitted Powell. “I would have a wild take on Batman. It definitely would not be like a Matt Reeves tone — it’d probably be closer to [Michael] Keaton.” He then pointed to Keaton’s Batmobile from the Tim Burton movies. “See? This is the era,” he added.

Although not as the Caped Crusader, Powell has appeared in a Batman movie, having a small role in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (2012) as Trader #1. “I get my head smashed in by Bane in The Dark Knight Rises,” he recalled to GQ proudly.

Glen Powell is still attached to the Captain Planet reboot

Besides Batman, the only other superhero that Powell has openly discussed playing is Captain Planet, the environmental hero from the beloved 1990s children’s cartoon. However, unlike Batman, Powell is actually attached to portray Captain Planet in an upcoming reboot movie from Warner Bros. and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company. The actor recently shared an update on the long-gestating project, which has been in development since 2016.

“God, I freaking hope so,” said Powell, when asked if the future of the Captain Planet movie looked bright. “Trust me, we have been working hard on that one for a long time. I’m optimistic about his future, but you never know the timeline.”

Two Batman movies are in development at DC Studios

DC Studios is currently developing two Batman movies for theatrical releases: The Batman Part II, a sequel to Matt Reeves’ 2022 film, The Batman; and The Brave and the Bold, which will be part of James Gunn’s forthcoming DC Universe. Robert Pattinson is set to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman in The Batman Part II. No actor has been selected yet to play the DCU’s Batman, leaving the door open for Powell to potentially don the cape and cowl.

Powell can be seen next in Hit Man, which premieres on Netflix on June 7.
