Ryan Reynolds Was Surprised Disney ‘Let Us Go as Hard R’ for Deadpool & Wolverine

When Deadpool & Wolverine releases on July 26, 2024, the movie will follow suit with its predecessors in being a rated R movie, a move that star Ryan Reynolds was surprised happened.

Speaking to Variety, Reynolds opened up about the decision to make Deadpool & Wolverine an R-rated movie. The actor praised Marvel Studios for allowing them to be just as chaotic as they had been in the past entries.

“I hope it doesn’t sound condescending, I’m really proud of them for doing this. I think it’s a huge step for them,” Reynolds said. “I mean, it adds a whole other color to this kaleidoscopic wheel that is that company and the different people that they have been entertaining forever.”

Both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 have not shied away from leaning into the R-rated aspect of the first two film’s ratings. Judging by the trailers for Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the third entry in the franchise will be just as raunchy.

What is Deadpool & Wolverine about?

Deadpool & Wolverine reunites lead star Ryan Reynolds with Free Guy and The Adam Project filmmaker Shawn Levy, who has signed on to helm the long-awaited project. Joining Reynolds are Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Garner, who are finally coming out of their superhero retirement to reprise their respective iconic Marvel roles as Wolverine and Elektra.

It will also feature the return of Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Rob Delaney as Peter, Stefan Kapicic as Colossus, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio. The movie will also welcome the addition of Marvel newcomers Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen.

The film is written by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells from a previous draft by the Molyneux sisters (Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin). It is produced by Reynolds, Levy, and Kevin Feige.
