Joker 2 Will Be a Jukebox Musical With At Least 15 Songs

A new report reveals how much popular and original music will be featured in Joker: Folie à Deux.

Variety learned from industry insiders that the sequel to Todd Phillips‘ 2019 DC blockbuster will be “mostly a jukebox musical” in the style of Mamma Mia! and Moulin Rouge. Though the soundtrack list has not been revealed, the report states that the Joker sequel will feature reinterpretations of at least 15 “very well-known” songs, including “That’s Entertainment” from 1953’s The Band Wagon. Additionally, there may be at least one or two original songs as Joker composer Hildur Guðnadóttir returns for the sequel to “infuse her distinctive, haunting [music] cues.”

While details about Joker: Folie à Deux’s plot remain under wraps, it is expected to continue from the previous installment’s conclusion with Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) incarcerated at Arkham Asylum and crossing paths with psychiatrist-turned-girlfriend Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga). The $200 million budgeted sequel plans to take inspiration from Francis Ford Coppola’s infamous 1982 flop One from the HeartPhillips’ cinematographer Lawrence Sher praised director Phillips for going bold on the sequel.

“Something I appreciate about Todd Phillips — who I’ve done seven movies with, including Joker — is that he’s always taking risks,” Sher said. “We’ve got the new Joker coming out next year and we’re just finishing up post-production on it. This movie is a big swing and it’s going to be really surprising to people. I’m so excited for everyone to see it.”

Joker: Folie á Deux is scheduled for release on October 4, 2024.
