James Gunn Has No Plans for Brightburn 2

James Gunn gives a disappointing update about plans for a sequel to 2019’s anti-superhero horror movie, Brightburn.

On Gunn’s Threads account, a user asked the current DC Studios co-CEO about the status of the Brightburn sequel following the original movie’s mid-credits sequence that teased other deadly superbeings in the world. Gunn simply replied, “No plans at all for this right now.”

Gunn’s comment is the latest update since H3 Entertainment announced development on Brightburn 2 last September. The production company had intended to incorporate methods of Metaverse, Web3, and AI into the sequel as a template for future productions. While none of the original cast and crew was announced to be attached to the sequel at the time, original director David Yarovesky had teased to Collider his intention to expand the universe of Brightburn in future movies.

“If we were to expand the Brightburn universe in other installments and in other ways, we would probably be doing it in the exact same way in total secrecy and then drop a cinematic trailer at some point that kind of teaches you what that new direction may be,” Yarovesky said.

What is Brightburn about?

Directed by Yarovesky and produced by Gunn, whose family members Brian and Mark Gunn wrote the screenplay, Brightburn was a dark, twisted take on the Superman origin story. It follows the tale of an alien boy named Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunn) who lands on Earth to be raised by a farm couple (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) in the small town of Brightburn, Kansas. As he discovers his extraordinary powers as he grows older, Brandon’s anger issues fester into a violent path of destruction on the town and his family. Despite mixed reviews, Brightburn was profitable at the box office, grossing $32 million against a budget reported in the $6-12 million range.

Brightburn is available on 4K Ultra HD. Blu-ray, and DVD.
