Kung Fu Panda 4 director Mike Mitchell says he wants Marvel Studios to produce a sequel to his 2005 Disney teen superhero movie Sky High.
“Save U, Save University. Sky High-er,” Mitchell said in an interview with ComicBook.com. “Here’s what it is. I know that Kevin Feige is a huge Sky High fan. Right when it came out, he met with me, and we talked about it. His whole team loved it because it was the first superhero comedy that was having fun with the genre. But, at the same time honoring it. And so, the trick is this: That was not made under Marvel. That was before they [Disney] bought Marvel.”
Mitchell added, “If we could pull Kevin into it. And, we could get Disney to…. Disney’s so scared of Marvel. Only Marvel can do superhero films. To which, I say, ‘Great!’ Let’s have Marvel do Sky High! That would be fun. So, I’m ready to go.”
Capitalizing on Marvel’s big-screen success in the early 2000s, Disney’s Sky High was a movie set on a secret airborne campus for teenage superheroes learning to use their powers. The story’s protagonist Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano) is the son of two famous superheroes (Kurt Russell and the late Kelly Preston) who enrolls in the school and not only deals with typical teenage life but also goes up against his father’s old nemesis. Featuring legends like Lynda Carter and future stars including Ahsoka‘s Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Sky High was a modest success at the box office with positive notices from critics.
The unproduced Sky High sequel and TV series
Initially, Mitchell had sequel plans for Sky High under the working title Save U (Save University), where Will and his classmates enter college. Additionally, Disney planned a TV series with most of the original cast, except for Russell and Preston, signed on to reprise their roles. Neither project has pushed past the development stage.
