DC’s James Gunn Debunks Massive Superman Budget Rumor

James Gunn has debunked a rumor regarding the budget of DC StudiosSuperman.

On Threads, Gunn was asked whether it was true or false that Superman, formerly known as Superman: Legacy, would have a budget of $364 million.

“Absolutely not,” Gunn responded. “How in the world do they think they know what our budget is?”

What do we know about James Gunn’s Superman?

Superman stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan is playing Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult is playing Lex Luthor, and Skyler Gisondo is playing Jimmy Olsen.

The cast also includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

Superman will be the first feature film in Gunn and Safran’s forthcoming DCU. It will be part of the first phase (called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters) of the new shared universe; although, prior to its release, an animated Creature Commandos series is coming in 2024. Other projects that are part of Gods and Monsters include The Brave the Bold, a Supergirl movie starring Milly Alcock, multiple television series, and more.

On February 29, 2024, Gunn announced that Superman: Legacy’s new title would simply be Superman. “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy,” Gunn said on Threads. “By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was Superman. Making our way to you July 2025. Happy Birthday, Clark!”

Plot details for Superman, which is currently filming, remain largely under wraps at this time, though it’s known that the movie won’t be an origin story.

Superman flies into theaters on July 11, 2025, from DC Studios.
