Spawn creator Todd McFarlane explained how his big screen reboot could be fast-tracked if Joker: Folie a Deux succeeds at the box office this fall.
In an exclusive interview with JoBlo.com, McFarlane told the outlet that he believes financiers will be more inclined to back Spawn due to the attachment of Scott Silver, the screenwriter 2019’s Joker and its upcoming sequel starring Joaquin Phoenix.
“What does Scott [Silver] want to do next? And depending on whether we sold Spawn prior to that or we sell it the Monday after Joker 2 comes out, you know what we all want to do and Scott is attached to it and you guys are all wondering, right? It’s this thing called Spawn,” McFarlane said.
The Spawn creator added that actors Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner remain attached to headline the reboot. Foxx, who has been attached since 2018, is set to play Al Simmons/Spawn while Renner is attached to play NYPD homicide cop Maximilian “Twitch” Williams III.
“Until somebody says otherwise (they’re still attached),” McFarlane continued. “What ends up happening — again, Hollywood is in an interesting place that actors, writers, directors, producers, they all have schedules, and the windows of opportunities open and close and open and close, right? You’ve heard about it before. Plenty of people have projects and then other stuff comes along and something gets delayed and you just got to show your schedule. So until somebody tells me in my ear that these gentlemen are not involved for whatever reason, then I assume I haven’t heard otherwise. Nobody’s nobody’s talking to me about anybody being replaced.“
The development of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn reboot
McFarlane announced plans to write and direct the reboot of his Image Comics anti-hero in 2007. Ten years later, McFarlane finalized a deal with Blumhouse to produce the reboot with a screenplay by Silver, Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier), and Matthew Mixon. Blumhouse chief Jason Blum recently confirmed that the reboot would finally hit theaters sometime in 2025. McFarlane, however, stated he was prepared to meet outside investors if Blumhouse stalled on the reboot’s development.
Spawn does not have an official release date.
