What do we know about Joker: Folie à Deux?

Joker, which was directed by Phillips, was released in United States theaters in October 2019. The film starred Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker, along with Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Frances Conroy.

The movie was a massive hit for Warner Bros., bringing in over a billion dollars at the global box office off of an estimated budget of $55-70 million. Phoenix won the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance and Hildur Guðnadóttir won Best Original Score, while the movie was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing.

While Joker was originally intended to be a standalone movie, Phillips announced a sequel was officially in development in June 2022. Phoenix and Beetz are both reprising their roles, while Lady Gaga is playing Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn.

Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung, and Harry Lawtey have also been cast in the movie in undisclosed roles.

Joker and Joker: Folie à Deux exist in a separate continuity from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s forthcoming DCU, which begins later this year with an animated Creature Commandos series. Gunn previously confirmed that the Joker sequel will utilize a new DC Elseworlds intro at the start of the film.

Joker: Folie à Deux releases in United States theaters on October 4, 2024.
