James Gunn Confirms He’ll Direct More DCU Projects After Superman: Legacy

James Gunn plans on writing and directing more DCU projects after Superman: Legacy and Peacemaker Season 2.

On Threads, Gunn was asked if he knows what DCU project he’ll be writing next now that he’s finished penning the script for Peacemaker Season 2.

“I won’t be able to write anything for a while due to my directing and producing schedules,” Gunn answered. He added in a separate comment, “Well until I wake up with an idea at 3 am and can’t help myself.”

When asked if plans to continue to writing and directing DCU projects in the future, Gunn answered, “That’s what I’m here for.”

What DCU projects has Gunn written so far?

In 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery hired Gunn and Peter Safran as co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios. Gunn and Safran are now working on a new DCU, which begins later this year with an animated Creature Commandos series written by Gunn.

Following that, Gunn is writing and directing Superman: Legacy, which releases in United States theaters on July 11, 2025. The movie, which begins filming in March 2024, stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, María Barbiela de Faría as The Engineer, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

A second season of Peacemaker, which will play into the DCU’s new continuity, is also on the way, though a release date has not yet been set at this time.

Additional forthcoming DCU projects include The Authority, The Brave and the Bold (which is being directed by The Flash’s Andy Muschietti), Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (written by Ana Nogueira and starring House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock), Swamp Thing (written and directed by James Mangold), Waller, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, and an untitled Arkham series from The Batman’s Reeves.
