Kick-Ass: Matthew Vaughn Says Reboot May Be Similar to Deadpool 3

Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn recently revealed that the franchise’s forthcoming reboot may share some similarities with Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3.

Speaking with The Playlist, Vaughn — who also directed the Marvel superhero movie X-Men: First Class — shared that he knew “a little bit about” Deadpool 3, but that he wasn’t “allowed to talk about it.” The director then hinted that his Kick-Ass reboot might share some of the same ideas present in Deadpool 3.

“And I had a little bit of fear at the time because I was like, ‘Oh my god, this sounds like maybe what we’re doing with Kick-Ass, they’re doing,” he teased. “But I think we can both survive.”

What is Deadpool 3 about?

At the time of writing, Marvel Studios has not officially revealed any story details for Deadpool 3, which brings back Ryan Reynolds as the titular Merc with a Mouth. However, leaked set photos and rumors have strongly suggested that the sequel will deal with the Multiverse and time travel. It is unknown if these elements are part of what Vaughn is planning for his Kick-Ass reboot, which will be part of a new film trilogy. He previously teased that the reboot would be set in a “very, very meta-universe,” which is an all too familiar phrase for Deadpool fans.

Vaughn directed the first film in the Kick-Ass franchise, which was released in 2010 and starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the title hero. A sequel, which was directed by Jeff Wadlow and produced by Vaughn, followed in 2013. A third installment was planned at one point but never made it out of development, with Vaughn announcing his intentions to reboot the franchise in 2023.

Deadpool 3 opens in theaters on July 26, 2025. Vaughn’s Kick-Ass reboot doesn’t have a release date yet.
