Captain America 4: Danny Ramirez Says Top Gun: Maverick Prepped Him for MCU Sequel

Captain America: Brave New World star Danny Ramirez was prepared for the physicality of an Marvel Cinematic Universe production due to his experience working on Top Gun: Maverick.

In an interview with Collider, Ramirez was asked if he had to approach the character of Joaquin Torres from Disney+‘s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier miniseries differently in the context of a big-budget blockbuster like Brave New World.

“No, I think the importance of the character was really spoken to me really early on, even before the show, and so the trajectory is an exciting one,” Ramirez said. “I think nothing changes in preparation. I shot them both…I shot the show after [Top Gun: Maverick], and so, I think there is so much that Top Gun taught me in regards to…obviously stunts, and the story and the blood, sweat, and tears that you leave on set and what you see in the frame.”

Ramirez added, “So many of those moments, in order to play, you’ve realized like, “OK, for this really intense moment to play, this energy has to be expelled no matter what.” You can’t fake that. You can’t, like, pretend you’re like, sweating and like, huffing and puffing. Like there comes a time that, like, you actually have to do it.”

Who is Joaquin Torres?

Joaquin Torres was first introduced in the pages of Marvel Comics’ Captain America: Sam Wilson #1 by Nick Spencer and Daniel Acuña. As a teenager, Torres was held captive and experimented on by the Sons of the Serpent who injected him with the DNA of Wilson’s pet falcon Redwing. Given the power of flight and heightened senses, Torres became the new Falcon who partnered with Wilson’s Captain America.

In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Torres made his MCU debut as an Air Force lieutenant working alongside Wilson in an investigation into the Flag Smashers. With the character’s next appearance in Brave New World currently undergoing reshoots, Torres gave praise to the production, director Julius Onah, and star Anthony Mackie.

“Yeah, I’m excited to be a part of it and to work with Julius Onah on this one and, the rest of the creative team with Anthony [Mackie],” Ramirez said. “Any time that you spend with great creatives, I think is like, what’s better than that?”

Captain America: Brave New World opens in theaters on February 14, 2025. In addition to Mackie and Ramirez, the film stars Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson, Shira Haas, Harrison FordLiv TylerXosha Roquemore, Rosa Salazar, and WWE superstar Seth Rollins (real name Colby Lopez). Additionally, all episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are streaming on Disney+.
