The Search for the DCU’s Supergirl Is Down to 2 Actors

James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s rebooted DC Universe has nearly found its Supergirl.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, screen tests for the DCU‘s Kara Zor-El/Supergirl took place yesterday — with the search being narrowed to two actors. The outlet reports that Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly both tested for the role in Atlanta. DC Studios co-heads Gunn and Safran were present.

Whoever lands the role will debut as the Girl of Steel in writer-director Gunn’s Superman: Legacy before leading the charge in screenwriter Ana Nogueira‘s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. They will also join the growing list of actors who have played Kara Zor-El in live-action.

Helen Slater first suited up as the Last Daughter of Krypton in the original Supergirl movie from 1984. Laura Vandervoort later played Supergirl in The CW’s Smallville. Melissa Benoist took over the role for the CBS/CW Supergirl solo series. Most recently, Sasha Calle played an alternate-reality version of Kara in the DC Extended Universe film The Flash.

What have Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly been in?

Donnelly is perhaps best known for her role as Addison in Disney Channel’s Zombies trilogy. She also portrayed a young Mary Winchester (née Campbell) in The CW’s Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters. Donnelly has even played Supergirl before — voicing the character in the animated films Legion of Super-Heroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One. She will reprise the role in Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Two.

Some of Donnelly’s other roles include Scream in Spider-Man: Maximum Venom and Val in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. She is also a singer, having released her debut single in 2018.

Meanwhile, Alcock is perhaps best known for her role as a young Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon. Back in her native Australia, Alcock has also starred in such television shows as Upright, The Gloaming, and Reckoning. Then, over in London’s West End, she portrayed Abigail Williams in the Gielgud Theatre’s 2023 production of The Crucible.

What to expect from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on the 2021-2022 DC comic book series of the same name by Tom King and Bilquis Everly. The upcoming film is one of several projects Gunn and Safran have announced as part of the first wave of DCU releases.

“We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton, and who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life and then come to Earth,” Gunn previously said of Woman of Tomorrow. “She is much more hard-core and not the Supergirl we’re used to.”

Superman: Legacy opens in theaters on July 11, 2025. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow does not have a release date.
