James Gunn Dispels Superman: Legacy Public Domain Rumor

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has debunked a rumor involving Superman: Legacy and the titular character’s eventual entry into the public domain.

On Threads, Gunn was asked by a fan if members of The Authority were being added to the upcoming Superman film because of the character’s entry into the public domain in 2034. The filmmaker was quick to shoot the rumor down, stating that “no story decisions were based on characters becoming public domain.”

The titular role in Superman: Legacy is being played by David Corenswet (Pearl, The Politician), while Lois Lane will be played by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan. They’re joined by Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, María Gabriela De Faría, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, and more. The film is set to release on July 11, 2025.

The DC Universe’s first phase, called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, will feature a multitude of different movies and television shows. A few of the announced projects include a Batman and Robin-focused movie called The Brave and the Bold, a Supergirl movie titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing film, and multiple TV shows.
