James Gunn’s DCU Has ‘No Plans’ for Anyone Else to Play Harley Quinn Besides Margot Robbie

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU has no plans on letting anyone besides Margot Robbie play Harley Quinn at this time.

On Threads, Gunn addressed recent comments Robbie made when asked if she would ever reprise her role as Harley Quinn. Robbie recently told Variety, “I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her. Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”

When asked if this means Robbie won’t be playing Harley in the forthcoming DCU, Gunn said, “I haven’t talked to Margot about Harley for a long time. But I’d love to work with her again as Harley or as someone else. There are no plans at this time for anyone else to play Harley (I mean, other than in Todd’s movie or the animated show/s).”

Gunn also hinted that the DCU already has some level of plans to involve Harley in some capacity, as he replied, “Mmm that’s not exactly what I said” in response to a comment saying it was “sad you didn’t plan anything for HQ in your DCU yet.”

Harley Quinn, DC Studios, and Margot Robbie

Robbie played Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, and 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Lady Gaga, meanwhile, is set to play the character in Todd Phillip’s Joker: Folie à Deux, which exists outside the DCU continuity and hits United States theaters on October 4, 2024.

The DCU officially launches in 2024 with an animated Creature Commandos series. Following that, Gunn is writing and directing Superman: Legacy, which begins filming in March 2024 before releasing in theaters on July 11, 2025.
