Superman: Legacy’s James Gunn Gives Preproduction, Casting Update on Upcoming DCU Movie

James Gunn has provided a preproduction and casting update regarding the upcoming Superman: Legacy movie.

On Threads, Gunn was asked if he could share any updates regarding Superman: Legacy’s production preparations, as the upcoming DCU movie is planning to begin filming in March 2024. “It’s going swimmingly,” Gunn answered. “Sets being built, costumes being finished, actors studying roles, prosthetics and VFX models being made, flights booked. Here we go.”

When asked how much of Superman: Legacy’s cast had been locked in, Gunn confirmed that it was “more” than 90 percent but still less than 100 percent.

Who has been cast in Superman: Legacy?

Superman: Legacy will see David Corenswet play the titular Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult has been cast as Lex Luthor, while Sara Sampaio is playing Eve Teschmacher and Skyler Gisondo is playing Jimmy Olsen.

The cast also includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner.

A previous online report claimed the plot synopsis for Superman: Legacy would be, “Superman, a cub reporter in Metropolis, embarks on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent.”

Gunn debunked the report on Threads in December 2023, saying, “Not sure where this logline came from. I didn’t write it. It has elements of truth (obviously based on things I’ve said in the past). But I wouldn’t describe the plot this way, [and] I wouldn’t call Clark a cub reporter. He’s a thirty-year-old full-on reporter.”

He did, however, confirm a March 2024 production start date for Superman: Legacy. He wrote, “I’m grateful every day our production team worked their asses off to keep things going through the strikes. Forces impelled us to stop many times — [and] if we had we’d never make July 2025.”

Superman: Legacy hits United States theaters on July 11, 2025.
