Michael Mann Speaks on the Superhero Genre and Making a Science-Fiction Movie

Michael Mann has an appreciation for the superhero genre, but he doesn’t plan to make a superhero movie himself.

Appearing on The Playlist’s The Discourse podcast, Mann was asked to share some thoughts on the current state of the superhero genre and if he’d ever be interested in making one himself.

“I only make films that I feel passionate about and that will place me a little bit on the frontier, or more on the frontier,” Mann said. “That’s where I do my best work. I’d like to be a journeyman director, go from film to film to film, but I don’t think I’d be very good at it. It kind of doesn’t get my blood running.

“On the other hand, I think that Guardians of the Galaxy, for example — not necesssarily this last one, but the two prior — have really worked. I love watching them. The reason they work is because they have a really well-done story structure behind them. It’s exciting in the sense of being able to expand into myth that way and to create myth.”

Mann added, “It’s a very exciting medium. It’s not necessarily something I want to do. I do want to do a science-fiction project, but it’s not superheroes.”

What movies has Michael Mann made?

Mann is best known for making crime dramas such as 1981’s Theif, 1986’s Manhunter, 1995’s Heat, 2004’s Collateral, and 2006’s Miami Vice. He also made The Last of the Mohicans in 1992, The Insider in 1999, and Ali in 2001.

His latest film, Ferrari, stars Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari, while Penélope Cruz plays his wife, Laura. Sahilene Woodley, Sarah Gadon, Jack O’Connell, and Patrick Dempsey also star in the film.

Written by Troy Kennedy Martin and based on the 1991 biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine by Brock Yates, Ferrari is currently playing in United States theaters.
