Rebel Moon writer Kurt Johnstad has an explanation for Jimmy’s new look at the end of the movie.
In Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, Anthony Hopkins voices a robot named Jimmy. While Jimmy is initially part of the nefarious military empire known as Motherworld when the film begins, he gradually has a change of heart and aligns himself with the rebels over the course of the movie. Near the end of Rebel Moon, Jimmy then reappears wearing a crown of antlers on his mechanical head.
Speaking with Variety, Johnstad explained that the upcoming extended cut of Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire features more scenes with Jimmy explaining where this crown came from.
“Jimmy has a much bigger story in those extended cuts and certainly in the second movie,” he said. “It’s a little bit like Jimmy goes from this sentient robot to really becoming a little more human, and he goes a little feral. When everybody is being collected and the team is getting built, he’s running around in the woods being like a feral creature and hunting and sitting by the brook and catching fish and doing Jimmy things out in the woods, so that’s where the crown of antlers comes from.”
What is Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire about?
“After crash landing on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a stranger with a mysterious past, begins a new life among a peaceful settlement of farmer,” the official synopsis reads. “But she soon becomes their only hope for survival when the tyrannical Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his cruel emissary, Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein), discover the farmers have unwittingly sold their crops to the Bloodaxes (Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Fisher) — leaders of a fierce group of insurgents hunted by the Motherworld.
“Tasked with finding fighters who would risk their lives to defend the people of Veldt, Kora and Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), a tenderhearted farmer naive in the realities of war, journey to different worlds in search of the Bloodaxes, and assemble a small band of warriors who share a common need for redemption along the way: Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a pilot and gun for hire; General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), a legendary commander; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a master swordswoman; Tarak (Staz Nair), a captive with a regal past; and Milius (E. Duffy), a resistance fighter. Back on Veldt, Jimmy (voiced by Anthony Hopkins), an ancient mechanized protector hiding in the wings, awakens with a new purpose. But the newly formed revolutionaries must learn to trust each other and fight as one before the armies of the Motherworld come to destroy them all.”
Directed by Zack Snyder, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is currently streaming on Netflix. The sequel, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, releases on April 19, 2024.
