Zachary Levi Addresses Common Shazam 2 Criticism: ‘I Tried to Age Him as Billy Ages’

Zachary Levi is opening up about a common complaint some fans have with DC’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Levi discussedhis performance in the DCEU’s second Shazam! movie, which was released in United States theaters in March 2023.

Some fans took issue with the differences between Levi and Asher Angel’s performances in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Despite playing the same character, some said Levi acted more “immature” compared to Angel’s take on Billy Batson.

What did Zachary Levi say about his Shazam! Fury of the Gods performance?

“From the first movie to the second, I tried to age him as Billy ages, you know, in his actual younger teen form,” Levi said of his performance. “Inside, he’s aging too. Obviously, in the first film, he was like 15, and in the second he’s 17ish, almost 18. So I tried to address that and bring that into the character, which ironically, in some ways, kind of made him feel almost a little more immature. But that’s because when he’s 15, he’s not trying to be cool guy, when he’s 17, he’s trying to be cool guy, he’s trying to be the leader, and he’s trying to kind of put on that bravado more.”

Directed by David F. Sandberg with a script by Henry Hayden and Chris Morgan, Shazam! Fury of the Gods made approximately $133.8 million at the global box office. It had a production budget of approximately $125 million, meaning it was considered to be a box-office bomb.

Along with Levi and Angel, the movie starred Jack Dylan Grazer and Adam Brody as Freddy Freeman, Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Calypso, Rachel Zegler as Anthea, and Djimon Hounsou as the wizard Shazam.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently streaming on Max and Netflix.
