Dune 3 Is Being Written, but Denis Villeneuve Might Make Another Movie First

Denis Villeneuve says Dune 3 is currently being written; however, he might make another movie before returning to Arrakis.

Per Variety, Villeneuve told South Korean press that a third Dune movie based on 1969’s Dune Messiah is currently being written. “The screenplay is almost finished but it is not finished,” he said. “It will take a little time … There’s a dream of making a third movie … it would make absolute sense to me.”

Regarding whether or not he plans to return to direct Dune 3, Villeneuve said, “I don’t know exactly when I will go back to Arrakis. I might make a detour before just to go away from the sun. For my mental sanity I might do something in between, but my dream would be to go a last time on this planet that I love.”

Dune: Part 2 arrives in March 2024

With Villeneuve’s first Dune movie having been released in October 2021, Dune: Part Two is now scheduled to hit United States theaters in March 2024.

“Dune: Part Two will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family,” the synopsis reads. “Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”

Starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Borlin, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Austin Butler, Christopher Walken, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Léa Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem, Dune: Part Two releases on March 15, 2023.

It was also recently announced that Killers of the Flower Moon writer Eric Roth had been tapped to write a screenplay for a movie that’s “about space and time” for Villeneuve to direct.
