Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, has suggested that the lackluster box office performance of The Marvels was due to the Marvel Studios film needing more oversight from executives during its production.
As reported by IGN, Iger was interviewed at the NYT Dealbook Summit on Wednesday, November 29. His remarks included a brief appraisal of The Marvels, the latest feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has fallen short of the earnings of most other installments in the franchise. In reference to the difficulties that the movie faced during filming, especially the restraints caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Iger said “there wasn’t as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives [that are] really looking over what’s being done day after day after day.”
Iger went on to state, “I would say, right now, my No. 1 priority is to help the studio turn around creatively.”
Captain Marvel’s cosmic return in The Marvels
In The Marvels, Brie Larson‘s Carol Danvers leads a new team which comes to be known as The Marvels, composed of herself, Iman Vellani‘s Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, and Teyonah Parris‘ Monica Rambeau/Photon. The movie serves as a sequel not only to 2019’s Captain Marvel, but also to Ms. Marvel, the 2022 miniseries starring Vellani. The character of Monica, meanwhile, was introduced as a child in 2019’s Captain Marvel. Parris took up the mantle as an older Monica in the 2021 miniseries WandaVision.
Nia DaCosta directed The Marvels from a script she co-wrote with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik. In addition to the main trio, the film’s cast includes many new and returning MCU stars — such as Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Park Seo-joon, Lashana Lynch, Randall Park, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, and Saagar Shaikh.
The Marvels is playing in theaters now.
