Scarlett Johansson has addressed rumors suggesting that Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow may be returning to the MCU.
Johansson appeared on The Today Show on Monday, November 13, 2023, and was asked about recent rumors suggesting that Marvel Studios may be bringing Black Widow back from the dead after the character was killed in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
“I feel like [Avengers: Endgame] is kind of the end, right? Like, can you come back? Could it be like a vampire version of the character? Because I’m here for that. Like a zombie version, maybe,” she said.
Speaking with TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie, Johansson further said that resurrecting Black Widow would be a “miracle.”
“It would be a miracle,” she commented. “It would be a real Marvel miracle. It would be a marvel. But, you know, who knows?”
What are the rumors regarding Black Widow’s MCU return?
In April 2023, prior to the start of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike, Johansson told Variety she was done playing Natasha Romanoff following 2021’s Black Widow prequel movie.
“I’m done,” she said. “Chapter is over. I did all that I had to do. Also coming back and playing a character again and again, over a decade of time, is such a unique experience.”
On November 1, 2023, Variety reported that Marvel was considering bringing the cast of 2012’s The Avengers — presumably Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, and Chris Evans — back for another Avengers movie.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight during the Las Vegas premiere of The Marvels, Kevin Feige said he wasn’t aware of a “Fallen Avengers” rumor, but he did address Johansson and Downey Jr. potentially returning for another Marvel project.
“We’re doing a project with Scarlett,” he said. “I love Robert, who is part of the family. In terms of returning, we’ll have to see.”
