Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire – Iconic Kaiju Reportedly Set to Return

A fan-favorite kaiju will reportedly return for the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

According to a tweet posted by industry insider ViewerAnon, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will bring back Mothra, an iconic kaiju who made their first MonsterVerse appearance in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

“Monsterverse fans, I’ve now had enough confirmation (multiple sources) to just say this outright: Mothra returns in GODZILLA X KONG,” the tweet reads.

“Mothra originally did not appear in the film (though there was an easter egg tease),” a follow-up tweet reads. “An original divine kaiju called Fosphera who didn’t test well is now Mothra and audiences are said to be much happier with the reveal.”

What is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire about?

“This latest entry in the Monsterverse franchise follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own,” the official synopsis reads. “The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”

Serving as a sequel to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is directed by Adam Wingard and written by Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater. It stars Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Kaylee Hottle, Fala Chen, Alex Ferns, and Rachel House.

Having completed filming in November 2022, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is scheduled to release in United States theaters on April 12, 2024, from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures.
