The third installment of the Deadpool film series will feature the greatly anticipated return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine — but director Shawn Levy still isn’t sure how to fit Ryan Reynolds‘ co-star into the title of Deadpool 3.
In an interview with Wired, Levy was asked if the title of the upcoming film will be Deadpool and Wolverine. “No, there’s no title yet,” he replied. “I sometimes refer to it as ‘Deadpool versus Wolverine’ or ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ or ‘Deadpool 3 With Wolvie’ — we’ve got a few titles we’ve been bandying about, but boy, it’s a tough one.” Given these possibilities, it seems that Deadpool won’t be the only antihero in the title this time around.
Why Wolverine’s role in Deadpool 3 is such a big deal
The first two Deadpool movies were released before the historic Fox-Disney merger, which meant that the characters from Marvel Comics who could share the screen with Reynolds’ Wade Wilson were limited. In the meantime, Jackman had retired from playing Wolverine after a long run that began in 2000 with X-Men and ended with 2018’s Logan and the character’s apparent death.
However, the real-life friendship between Reynolds and Jackman, as well as Jackman’s appreciation for the Deadpool movies, opened the door for their respective characters to finally come together on screen as they often do in the pages of their comics. In September 2022, Reynolds released a video confirming Jackman’s participation in Deadpool 3, which will also be the first in the series to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Directed by Levy and starring Reynolds and Jackman, Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 will also star Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Jennifer Garner, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapičić, Rob Delaney, and Matthew Macfadyen. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick return alongside Zeb Wells, penning the film from a previous draft by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin.
Previously slated for a May 3, 2024 release, Deadpool 3 is currently undated.
