Logan Is Canon to Deadpool 3, Says Director Shawn Levy

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy has confirmed that Hugh Jackman‘s last Wolverine appearance in Fox’s Logan is canon to the film’s storyline.

Levy made an appearance on the BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast, where he expressed admiration for the 2017 X-Men spin-off movie. Additionally, the director revealed that the latest Deadpool installment set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will not dismiss the events of Logan’s heartbreaking tale.

“I have always said that I can’t wait for Deadpool 3 to come out because all I want to do is give interviews alongside Ryan where we talk about our reverence for the movie Logan,” Levy said. “Logan is canon. We love Logan. That happened. I want the world to know, as the producer and director, all of us share a deep love and respect for Logan, every aspect of how it’s crafted, and all the events that take place.”

The return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine

Jackman’s return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 was announced in September 2022 after star Ryan Reynolds released a video confirming the actor’s participation. The announcement came five years after the release of Logan when Jackman announced his retirement from the role he played on the big screen since 2000’s X-Men; however, the actor’s interest in playing the character one more time alongside the Merc with the Mouth grew over time due to his real-life friendship with Reynolds as well as his love for 2016’s Deadpool.

While fans of Logan initially feared that Deadpool 3 would undermine Logan’s shocking finale that saw the iconic X-Men character meet a tragic death, the movie’s director James Mangold endorsed Jackman’s return in the upcoming MCU installment. “Oh my gosh! Everybody chill,” Mangold said. “Just kidding! I’m all good! LOGAN will always be there. Multiverse or prequel, time warp or wormhole, canon or non-canon, or even without a rationale, I cannot wait to see what madness my dear friends @VancityReynolds and @RealHughJackman cook up!”

Directed by Levy and starring Reynolds and Jackman, Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 co-stars Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Jennifer Garner, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapičić, Rob Delaney, and Matthew Macfadyen. Franchise screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick return alongside Zeb Wells penning the threequel from a previous draft by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin.

Previously slated for a May 3, 2024 release, Deadpool 3 is currently undated.
