Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu Suffers Ankle Injury

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu has revealed he has a torn Achilles tendon.

On Instagram, Liu shared a photo where he can be seen with a pair of crutches. “Achilles tears aren’t so bad when you’ve got twenty of your best friends to carry you around,” the actor wrote. “Thanks for the ultimate friends sports weekend, I miss walking but I miss you all more!” Liu did not disclose the exact cause of his torn Achilles tendon. However, the actor’s caption implies that the injury was sports related.

Having worked primarily in television before his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, Liu broke out into an overnight superstar when he played the title role in 2021’s Shang-Chi. Liu received positive reviews from critics for his performance and the movie grossed $432 million worldwide. Most recently, Liu was part of the all-star cast playing one of several live-action Kens in this year’s number-one blockbuster Barbie.

Shang-Chi’s future in the MCU

A sequel to Shang-Chi was announced to be in development shortly after the release of the first installment. Since then, Liu confirmed that the sequel “keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control.” Despite the setback, the actor is more optimistic about the Master of Kung Fu’s chances of being part of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which is to be helmed by Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton.

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure I’m gonna be in it too,” Liu said. “Beyond that, I really don’t know, and I don’t want to know before it’s absolutely ready. If there’s anything I’ve learned in this industry, especially with Marvel, it’s that things are changing, always in flux, and you really can’t be sure that something is going to happen until you’re on set and you’re about to do the scene. Even then, scenes get reshot, things get retooled, elements get added in post-production with visual effects and everything.”

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026.
