Blue Beetle Director Addresses Ted Kord’s Future in James Gunn, Peter Safran’s DCU

Blue Beetle’s Ángel Manuel Soto isn’t sure what the future has in store for Ted Kord — but he’s hoping the character shows up in a DCU project at some point.

In a recent interview with IGN, Soto was asked if he knew what James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming DCU might have planned for Ted Kord.

“I hope so,” Soto said in response to whether fans might see Ted Kord in future DCU projects. “I really hope so. I know that one of the projects that James Gunn had mentioned is Booster Gold. Booster Gold and Ted Kord, the Blue and Gold Series is amazing. They also have a lot of agency on Jaime Reyes and his world as mentors. So hopefully we set it up for [Kord] to have a more direct presence in his life. In the film, he’s always mentioned. He was always there in spirit, but at the end we let everybody know that he is not dead. So that opens a lot of opportunities and potential fun adventures to be had.”

Ted Kord is canonically the second person to become Blue Beetle following Dan Garrett. Ted is presumed dead for the majority of 2023’s Blue Beetle movie; however, the film’s mid-credit scene reveals Ted is still alive and is trying to contact his daughter, Jenny (played by Bruno Marquezine).

Xolo Maridueña is still playing Jaime Reyes in the DCU

While the upcoming DCU (which begins in 2024 with the animated Creature Commandos series) will introduce a new continuity, Gunn previously stated that some actors and plot points from past DCEU movies will still be relevant in future projects. Gunn confirmed that Xolo Maridueña will continue to play Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle in the DCU, while Viola Davis and John Cena will also return as Amanda Waller and Peacemaker.

The cast of 2017’s Justice League, however, won’t be reprising their roles in the DCU; although, Jason Momoa is reportedly in talks to play Lobo in the DCU’s new continuity.
