DC, Marvel Director Jay Oliva to Helm Animated Wheel of Time Movie

The White Tower — an upcoming animated feature film set in the world of The Wheel of Time — has secured DC and Marvel alum Jay Oliva as its director.

Per Deadline, Oliva’s career in film and animation has included projects for Warner Bros. Animation, Marvel, Sony, and Disney. He is also a fan of The Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. “Reading Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time inspired me to become a filmmaker, and having an opportunity to explore the world he created has been a lifelong dream of mine,” Oliva said.

Oliva has directed numerous animated projects and worked as a storyboard artist on well-known superhero films like Batman v. Superman, Ant-Man, Deadpool, and Wonder Woman.

While The Wheel of Time is currently being adapted into a live-action TV series on Prime Video, with two seasons now completed and a third in production, The White Tower will focus on a 3D animated, original story which takes place before the events of the book and TV series. The film is said to target a young adult audience and will center on a young girl who discovers her ability to channel the One Power and must journey to the White Tower to be trained as an Aes Sedai.

Zack Stentz, known for directing 2011’s Thor for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will provide the screenplay for The White Tower. Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon, both of whom are also executive producers on The Wheel of Time TV series, will produce.

The Wheel of Time is a high fantasy story set in a world where certain women have access to powerful magic and can join the feared and respected order of Aes Sedai. However, men with the same ability are doomed to mentally snap and endanger everyone around them, even the prophesied savior known as the Dragon Reborn.

The Wheel of Time Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming now on Prime Video. The White Tower film does not yet have a release window announced.
