Thunderbolts: Steven Yeun Reveals How He Got Cast in MCU Movie

Famed actor Steven Yeun has revealed how he ended up being cast in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Thunderbolts.

How did Steven Yeun get cast in Thunderbolts?

While taking part in The Hollywood Reporter‘s comedy actor roundtable, Yeun explained that a director he worked on the Netflix series Beef with ended up being chosen to direct Thunderbolts and saw Yeun as the ideal actor for his role.

“It kind of came together in a weird way,” Yeun noted. “Jake Schreier, who did episodes of Beef, he got the gig to direct it [Thunderbolts] and then he kind of saw me for this role. And I read the role and I was like, ‘This is actually a really interesting role, I’d be down to explore this.'”

Though Yeun’s Thunderbolts role hasn’t been confirmed, fans are speculating that he could be playing Robert Reynolds/Sentry — an immensely powerful but, at times, unstable superhero who is described as having “the power of one million exploding suns.”

Thunderbolts was previously scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 26, 2024, as part of Phase 5. Depending on how long the writers strike lasts, it could miss that date and be pushed back. However, no new date has been announced yet as the situation is still up in the air.

During Marvel Studios’ panel at D23, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige unveiled the cast for the upcoming Thunderbolts movie, which will be a team consisting of mostly supervillains and antiheroes. It includes Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah Jon-Kamen), US Agent (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kerleynko), Yelena Belova/Black Widow (Florence Pugh), and The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

The film will be directed by Jake Schreier, whose history as a director isn’t extremely extensive, having only worked on 2012’s Robot & Frank, 2015’s Paper Towns, and the 2021 filmed version of Chance the Rapper’s Magnificent Coloring World Tour.
