New Guardians of the Galaxy Team

New Guardians of the Galaxy Team Was Chosen by James Gunn, Not Marvel

After the latest sequel introduced a new Guardians of the Galaxy team, director James Gunn has revealed that he picked the new iteration’s members.

Who chose the members of the new Guardians of the Galaxy team?

One of the post-credits scenes from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 shows a new team lineup led by Rocket. The updated team’s members — Rocket, Groot, Kraglin, Adam Warlock, Cosmo, and Phyla, who was one of the High Evolutionary’s test subjects — were actually chosen by Gunn, rather than by Marvel Studios.

A fan asked Gunn through Twitter if he got to choose the new Guardians of the Galaxy team or if it was the studio that made the selection, which the filmmaker responded to with, “Yes, no.”

Gunn himself is now serving as Co-CEO of DC Studios and is set to direct Superman: Legacy, marking the end of his time at Marvel Studios after helming all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was directed by James Gunn and was released in theaters on May 5. The sequel heavily features the backstory of Rocket — the armed and snarky raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper — and his history with the film’s villain, The High Evolutionary (played by Chukwudi Iwuji). Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters.
