Ant-Man 3 Writer Compares the Quantum Realm To Jodorowsky’s Dune

The next great frontier in the MCU will be the Quantum Realm. In Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania, this microscopic dimension will be on full display as Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton) are transported to the Quantum Realm. It’s here they will meet and face off against Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). So far, the trailers have depicted the realm as a magical, psychedelic dimension. In the latest issue of Empire, Ant-Man 3 writer Jeff Loveness compared the celestial Quantum Realm to director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s ambitious attempt to adapt the sci-fi novel, Dune.

“It’s a fun place, [and] it’s a limitless place of creation and diversity and alien life,” said Loveness. “It’s Jodorowsky’s Dune within Marvel.”

For the uninitiated, the 2013 documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune chronicled the director’s quest to bring Frank Herbert’s fantasy universe to life. In the ’70s, legendary comic artist Jean “Moebius” Giraud created over 3000 illustrations and storyboards for Jodorowsky’s unwieldy plans to make a ten-to-fourteen hour Dune movie. Jodorowsky even lined up Salvador Dalí to portray the Emperor before the project ultimately fell apart.

As for the Quantum Realm itself, Janet van Dyne, the original Wasp, is the only character who has actually lived there for an extended time. Although Janet escaped in Ant-Man and the Wasp, she apparently encountered Kang before. And according to Pfeiffer, the film will explore that time in her life.

“She does have a very rich history with Kang, and unresolved issues,” said Pfeiffer. “The Quantum Realm can change a person, and you can have a whole other life down there. It’s something that she hasn’t wanted to get into.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania hits theaters on Friday, February 17.
