Legendary Hires Craig Titley To Write Its Ancient Aliens Movie

Being the laughingstock of the internet isn’t going to stop Ancient Aliens from trying to achieve box office glory. The idea of the long-running History Channel series getting its own movie raised a lot of eyebrows when it was announced last year. Regardless, Legendary is moving forward with plans for a film adaptation. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has drafted screenwriter Craig Titley to take his own pass at the script.

Titley previously worked as a writer and executive producer on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and also penned two episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. On the film side, he wrote the screenplay for 2010’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Titley also contributed to the scripts for Scooby-Doo and both Cheaper by the Dozen movies starring Steve Martin.

Ancient Aliens originally debuted on the History Channel in 2009. Since then, the show has featured “experts” who theorize that aliens traveled Earth many years ago and left evidence of their visits. However, the series has come under fire for promoting what many professionals dismiss as fiction or pseudoscience. Although it’s often the subject of ridicule, the show maintains a devoted following. It even spawned its own convention, Alien Con, which continues to bring in thousands of fans every year.

Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg are producing the project via Counterbalance Entertainment, with Heald also sitting in the director’s chair. Legendary previously hired Luke Ryan to write the script, but it’s not clear if Titley is rewriting his draft or starting fresh. The report notes that the studio is still developing the film as “a two-handed, globe-spanning adventure featuring ancient sites and artifacts and will involve the theories and questions raised by the docuseries.”

Legendary hasn’t announced a release date for Ancient Aliens.
