New Thor: Love and Thunder Featurette Salutes Taika Waititi’s Vision

Marvel’s first two Thor movies did their best to honor the self-serious personality and Shakespearean-style speech from the title character’s comic book appearances. But on 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi’s vision shook things up a bit. Waititi injected new blood into what was arguably the studio’s weakest franchise, so bringing him back for next week’s Thor: Love and Thunder was an easy choice. That’s why the latest featurette for the long-awaited sequel is all about the director and his unique sensibility for the Asgardian hero.

The featurette includes new interviews with the film’s cast members, including Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth. Previously, Hemsworth confessed that until Waititi came along, he was starting to get bored with playing Marvel’s God of Thunder. But once they starting filming Ragnarok, he immediately regained his passion for the character. And judging by this new assortment of behind-the-scenes footage, Waititi was able to keep Hemsworth’s spirits up in Love and Thunder as well.

Waititi shared that one of his goals for the film was to “double down on Ragnarok,” especially when it came to how vibrant the locations were. In the end, his work seems to have impressed everyone, including Christian Bale (Gorr the God Butcher), who called Waititi a “very bloody original filmmaker” and “mind-blowingly talented.” Returning star Natalie Portman also praised Waititi for “reflecting the way life can be: dark and comedic all at once,” a sentiment that was echoed by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige as well.

“Taika wanted to have fun [and] tell a big story,” said Feige. “But also showcase this emotion and this heart that Taika can do.”

Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on July 8.
