Amazon is adding another comic book adaptation to its streaming library. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has picked up the rights to writer Charles Soule and artist Ryan Browne’s Eight Billion Genies, with plans to turn the eight-issue miniseries into a feature-length film.
Image Comics launched Eight Billion Genies last month, and its second issue will arrive in stores today. The series imagines a world where every single person on Earth has a genie who is capable of granting only one wish. Some of the wishes are personal in scope. However, others have more far-reaching consequences. And once these wishes start clashing with each other, it isn’t long before society descends into chaos. The main story takes place in a dive bar, where several strangers gather amid the ongoing conflict outside.

Although Soule and Brown only have eight issues planned, Amazon has much bigger goals for Eight Billion Genies. The streamer is considering the potential for an “expansive cross-media universe” beyond the first movie. This includes a TV series, which could explore the world beyond the comic’s small group of bar patrons.
Right now, there’s no director or screenwriter attached to the film. Regardless, Soule and Browne will both serve as executive producers. It also makes sense that Soule’s work is getting newfound interest among industry executives. The influence of his Star Wars comics was felt in Disney+’s recently-concluded Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Additionally, Soule’s She-Hulk run reportedly served as a major inspiration for Marvel Studios’ upcoming series.
