The Russos’ Electric State Goes To Netflix, Chris Pratt in Talks To Join

Joe and Anthony Russo’s next sci-fi epic has a new home. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has landed the distribution rights for The Electric State, based on the 2018 book by Simon Stålenhag. Additionally, Chris Pratt is in talks for a role in the film, which would reunite him with the Russos for the first time since Avengers: Endgame hit theaters in 2019.

The Russos optioned The Electric State in 2017, before Stålenhag’s book was even published. Originally, Andy Muschietti was going to direct the film and produce with his sister, Barbara. But once the Mischietti’s moved over to The Flash, the Russos decided to fill the director’s chair themselves. Universal previously secured the film’s rights in 2020 following a heated bidding war. However, the studio later relinquished its grip on the project over budgetary concerns. Right now, the film is expected to cost more than $200 million to make.

Millie Bobby Brown will star in the film as an orphaned teenager who travels across a retro-futuristic vision of the American West in search of her missing brother. Accompanying her on this journey are a “sweet but mysterious” robot and an “eccentric” drifter. The report doesn’t specify which character Pratt might play if his deal is closed.

Netflix already has a relationship with the Russos. The streaming service will release the brothers’ next film, The Gray Man, on July 22. In addition to Chris Evans, that film notably reunites the siblings with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who will also pen the script for The Electric State. AGBO’s Mike Larocca is producing the film alongside Chris Castaldi and Patrick Newall. Markus, McFeely, Angela Russo-Otstot, Jake Aust, and Geoff Haley will serve as executive producers.

The Electric State will begin production in Atlanta this October.
