Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel Will Arrive In December 2023

Earlier this month, director and screenwriter Jason Reitman and his co-writer, Gil Kenan, announced that the next Ghostbusters movie has been given the codename “Firehouse.” Now, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel has a release date. Via The Hollywood Reporter, the film will hit theaters on December 20, 2023.

There’s not much that we know about it at this point, except that the movie will take place in New York, the original home of the Ghostbusters. The post-credits scene of Afterlife featured the Ecto-1 returning to the Ghostbusters’ firehouse headquarters. It also established Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) as the man who has been keeping the spirit of the team alive, so to speak. In the decades since Ghostbusters 2, Winston has become a successful businessman and he owns the firehouse. He also pays the rent for the occult bookshop run by his former teammate, Ray Stntz (Dan Aykroyd).

The one thing that Winston didn’t check on during his homecoming to the firehouse was a silent alarm on the ghost containment unit in the basement. Presumably, that will be the thread that sets up the sequel.

For now, none of the cast members from Afterlife have been officially confirmed to return. Hudson and Aykroyd seem likely to be back from the first team. It’s unclear if Bill Murray will also return as Peter Venkman. From the newer cast, we’d bet that Mckenna Grace will be back as Phoebe Spengler alongside Finn Wolfhard as her brother, Trevor, and Carrie Coon as their mother, Callie. Logan Kim and Celeste O’Connor will probably come back as well as Podcast and Lucky, respectively. Hopefully, Paul Rudd will be up for reprising his role as Gary Grooberson.

Given that the new sequel’s release date is about 17 months away, cameras will likely begin rolling this year.
