Emma Roberts Books a Role in Sony’s Madame Web Movie

We can officially add another cast member to Sony’s upcoming Madame Web standalone film. Deadline reports that Emma Roberts will star opposite Dakota Johnson in the studio’s next MCU-adjacent Marvel movie. However, her character’s identity is still unknown.

Roberts is probably best known for being a repeat cast member in FX’s American Horror Story franchise. Most recently, she appeared in American Horror Story: 1984 in 2019. Roberts also starred in Fox’s Scream Queens from 2015-2016. Her next movie, Maybe I Do, just wrapped production.

Johnson is headlining Madame Web as the film’s title character. In Marvel’s comic book universe, two different characters have adopted this mantle since 1980. The first, Cassandra Webb, was an elderly blind psychic who occasionally used her precognitive abilities to help Spider-Man fight criminals. Cassandra eventually passed on her powers to Julia Carpenter, a former Spider-Woman who also inherited Cassandra’s blindness as a side-effect of the transfer. Sony has yet to confirm which iteration of Madame Web will be played by Johnson in the film. Regardless, Sony reportedly intends to market her character as their own version of Doctor Strange.

Sony will release Madame Web in theaters on July 7, 2023.
