Avatar: The Way of Water Trailer Finally Surfaces Online

For those of us not fortunate enough to catch it in theaters prior to Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, the first look at Avatar‘s sequel finally arrived online today. In glorious 2D, of course. It’s been a long time, but the Avatar: The Way of Water trailer finally proves this movie is, indeed, real. And as James Cameron and others have discussed over the years, it dives into Pandora’s oceans. Though it certainly does not appear to stay there.

Take a look below for our first glance at what Jake and Neytiri have done in the intervening years. Having kids, of course. But the threat of renewed conflict with humans seems ever-present, even as it looks like a few have somehow gone native without breath masks or avatar bodies.

According to the official synopsis, “Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”

Avatar: The Way of Water opens Dec 16. In addition to Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, fans can expect the return of Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, Matt Gerald, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang. Since those last two played characters who died in the first film, the plot twists to bring them back should get interesting. Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, Edie Falco, Vin Diesel, and Jemaine Clement reportedly join them in the new one.
