Taika Waititi Says Gorr the God Butcher is the Best Villain in MCU History

It’s fairly standard for directors to say nice things about their upcoming movies before they’re released. However, Taika Waititi talks a bigger game than most. After wowing audiences with Thor: Ragnorok in 2017, Waititi will return to the Marvel fold this summer with Thor: Love and Thunder. And he claims that the film’s secret weapon is none other than Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher.

The first trailer for Love and Thunder finally premiered online last month. Unfortunately, we still haven’t seen Bale’s character in anything other than toy form. But the teaser did give us a brief glimpse of the threat he poses. Namely, by showing the rotting corpse of Falligar the Behemoth, in a frame ripped straight out of Jason Aaron and Esad Ribić’s Thor comics. Waititi shared a bit more about Gorr’s arrival in a new interview with the Associated Press, even going so far as to claim that Bale’s villain blows every other Marvel big-bad out of the water.

“It’s a great, really fun, weird little group of heroes,” said Waititi. “A new team for Thor with Korg, Valkyrie, and The Mighty Thor. And, in my humble opinion, we have probably the best villain that Marvel’s ever had in Christian Bale.”

Them’s fightin’ words. Although not every villain sticks the landing, Marvel has introduced no shortage of menacingly complex adversaries over the last 14 years. Bale obviously has experience with the superhero genre thanks to his starring role in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. But whether his upcoming heel turn rivals the likes of Black Panther’s Killmonger, Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Vulture, or Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Wenwu remains to be seen.

Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on July 8.
