Sony Announces Morbius’ Digital and Blu-ray Release Dates

Just one month after Morbius opened to dismal reviews and disappointing box office returns, Sony has announced the film’s home media release. The latest entry in the studio’s MCU-adjacent Marvel universe will hit digital on May 17, followed by 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on June 14.

After several delays, Morbius finally hit theaters on April 1. Although not without its defenders, critics largely agreed that it really wasn’t worth the wait. The film currently has a 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviews highlighting the visual effects and performances as some of its weakest attributes. Marvel fans also took aim at Sony for encroaching on the MCU’s territory with two post-credits scenes that didn’t make much sense.

Regardless, Morbius is unlikely to get a follow-up anytime soon. The movie opened at number one with $39 million (a substandard figure for a superhero movie) and it’s been all downhill ever since. So far, Jared Leto’s living vampire has only managed to rake in $161 million worldwide. According to several reports, it needed to make at least $300 million just to break even. With the film officially out of the top 10 as of this weekend, that number is unattainable.

Sony is hoping to attract new viewers with an assortment of special features. But it doesn’t sound like that includes the deleted scenes or alternate ending that Al Madrigal (who played FBI agent Al Rodriguez in the film) mentioned last week in an interview with ComicBookMovie.com.
