Warner Bros. Moves Shazam! Fury of the Gods Back By One Week

There were a lot of angry DC fans last month when Warner Bros. postponed most of its upcoming superhero films. But the studio offered a bit of good news when it moved Shazam! Fury of the Gods from its original June 2023 release window to December 16 of this year. Still, this decision seemed ill-advised, as that date was already occupied by James Cameron’s long-awaited Avatar sequel. And now it seems that someone at WB has thought better of this strategy. Deadline reports that Fury of the Gods will now arrive one week later on December 21.

This news comes on the heels of Avatar producer Jon Landau’s presentation at CinemaCon earlier today. Not only did he reveal the sequel’s official title of Avatar: The Way of Water, he also gave audiences a sneak peak at the film’s teaser trailer. This essentially confirms that despite years of delays, the movie will finally hit theaters this winter.

Separating the films by one week might not make that much of a difference. The original Avatar kept the number one spot at the box office for seven consecutive weeks on its way to becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time. And after more than a decade of waiting, there’s no reason to suspect The Way of Water won’t be a juggernaut as well. It also doesn’t help that the original Shazam! wasn’t a particularly strong earner at the box office compared to other DC films. So Fury of the Gods is still facing an uphill battle at the end of the year.
