Warner Bros. is looking to make Minecraft its next video game film, and the studio already has a leading man in mind. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aquaman star Jason Momoa “is in final negotiations to star in the studio’s live-action Minecraft movie.” Additionally, Jared Hess has been signed to direct the film. Hess’ previous credits include Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, Gentlemen Broncos, Don Verdean, and Masterminds.
At first glance, Minecraft isn’t an obvious choice to become a live-action film because it’s not really a story-driven game. Instead, it’s a sandbox game that thrives on the creativity of its players. Markus “Notch” Persson created the game for Mojang Studios, and it was first released in 2011. The gameplay allows players to mine for materials and build elaborate creations in the world of the game. For skilled players, almost anything can be built in this game world.

Although Microsoft purchased Mojang Studios in 2014, the company decided to keep Minecraft on as many gaming platforms as possible. That’s also why Minecraft is the top selling video game of all-time iwith over 238 million copies sold. Microsoft reported as many as 140 million monthly users in 2021.
While Telltale Games’ Minecraft: Story Mode previously added a narrative to the game’s world, the film will probably follow the example of The LEGO Movie and come up with an original spin on it. For now, we know nothing about Momoa’s character or what the movie will actually be about.
